I understand that the hotel rooms blocked for the FLAND conference in Jamestown were reserved at the Holiday Inn Express. This is one of the furthest hotels from the college in town and I would suggest that if you want a closer one to the downtown area and college, including the Buffalo City Grille for the dinner (walking distance), you could try the Gladstone Inn - I believe the prices were similar last I heard. The number is 701-252-0700.

IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU REGISTER IN ADVANCE TO GET A HEAD-COUNT FOR SATURDAY'S LUNCHEON ON CAMPUS. Kate will be putting the newsletter up soon on the FLAND website as well, but I can send it easily - NDSU is closed but I am high and dry (so far) and working from home.

To change your keyboard to another language, go to Control Panel,
select Regional and Language Options. Select the tab Keyboards and Languages, click Change Keyboards. Click Add, find the language you want to add, click the plus sign beside it, then click the plus sign beside keyboard and then select the language. You might have to change it to another language version later, depending on the needs of your students. Depending on the language, there might be several variations listed there. Click ok. Then go to the tab Language Bar, select Docked in the task bar, as well as Show text labels on language bar. This will put a little icon at the bottom right of your screen, showing you the code for the language that your keyboard is set to use on each page. I think it defaults to your default language for each new page you open so you might have to change the language as needed per page, but it is simple with that little icon there! I hope this is helpful. My Thai student can type in Thai on any document on my computer with this set up. This also enables her to use the Thai2english site to search for words she doesn’t know in English, but knows in her L1. Enabling your keyboard will support your student’s L1, however they might need keyboarding skills in L1 in order to figure out how it is different from the English keyboard. Please let me know if this was helpful for you or not.

Dear FLAND Family,
Family obligations at home have left me unable to continue on to 1st Pres. Elect and Pres. of FLAND. If you are able, please speak to current Pres. Jeanne Hageman about becoming 2nd Pres. Elect. FLAND is a wonderful opportunity to serve your fellow foreign language educator colleagues across the state of North Dakota. It is an excellent opportunity with clear instructions to follow. Those in the past have packaged the officership into easy-to-follow timelines. Thank you, Mary Ann Crow jmcrow@bis.midco.net for more information

I will not be able to attend the Fargo conference this year, however I will be in Bismarck two weeks prior. I am looking for someone in the Bismarck area that will be attending the conference and would be willing to haul the books for the book fair, the coffee mugs to be sold, and my silent auction items. Thanks for your assistance!

My students just taught me a new game last week. It's similar to the telephone game where one person starts a sentence and it gets passed around and you see how it turns out in the end, only a slight variation, done with pencil. Each person starts with as many pieces of paper as there are people (I used scrap paper that I save--old announcements and the like that are only printed on one side--and then cut the paper into pieces the size of a small index card). You sit in a circle. Each person writes a random sentence in German on the top card and passes the whole stack to the right. The next person looks at the sentence, puts the card with the sentence on the bottom of the pile and then draws the sentence on the new top card. Then he passes it on to the right. The next person moves the drawing to the bottom of the stack, then writes the sentence that they think the drawing is about before passing it on. It continues around the circle. If you are given a drawing, you write a sentence; when you get a sentence you draw it. When everyone has his original stack back, you all share your pictures and sentences. Some of them don't change at all as they move around and some of them morph amazingly. It's a great thing to do when you only have half a class due to AP testing or other similar interruptions or after a test if you don't want to start the next unit right away. I think it's the most fun when you have kids that can't draw or when the sentence is more abstract than concrete.

Looking for some funreading? I got this e-mail from Mari Rasmussen and it looks interesting:
The Department of Education needs readers for the Foreign Language Assistance Program grants. Could you send out this information or do you have a list that I could send out to? The announcement is available at this website. I am not sure if you would be reading the grants at home or if you have to go to Washington. It sounds like the reading process would take place at your own location. It would be nice to have some people from North Dakota involved in the reading. Website for more information: http://www.ncela.gwu.edu/newsline/archives/2008/04/federal_applica.html. Thanks! Mari
