changeyour keyboard to almost any language
Feb 19 2009, 9:04 AM EST
To change your keyboard to another language, go to Control Panel, select Regional and Language Options. Select the tab Keyboards and Languages, click Change Keyboards. Click Add, find the language you want to add, click the plus sign beside it, then click the plus sign beside keyboard and then select the language. You might have to change it to another language version later, depending on the needs of your students. Depending on the language, there might be several variations listed there. Click ok. Then go to the tab Language Bar, select Docked in the task bar, as well as Show text labels on language bar. This will put a little icon at the bottom right of your screen, showing you the code for the language that your keyboard is set to use on each page. I think it defaults to your default language for each new page you open so you might have to change the language as needed per page, but it is simple with that little icon there! I hope this is helpful. My Thai student can type in Thai on any document on my computer with this set up. This also enables her to use the Thai2english site to search for words she doesn’t know in English, but knows in her L1. Enabling your keyboard will support your student’s L1, however they might need keyboarding skills in L1 in order to figure out how it is different from the English keyboard. Please let me know if this was helpful for you or not. Do you find this valuable?

1. i set mine international english

Under the General tab, you can make some language choices. (I set my default language as English (United States) – English – International because I teach Spanish. This allows me to use accent marks easily if you want to type in Spanish. Just type an apostrophe, then the vowel and the accented vowel will show up. If you want an apostrophe to follow a vowel, for the word ma’am for example, you’ll have to type the apostrophe and then a space in order for it to show up. For a contraction, simply type the apostrophe and the next consonant. If you have any questions, let me know! The Spanish keyboard itself (if you set it up with the following directions) has some differences I can explain, if you’d like.)
